Driving Expressions: Kia Sorento

Driving Expressions: Kia Sorento
September 8, 2017 by MasterTorque

Refreshed rather than new explains the changes to the Kia Sorento which result in an improvement of the overall driving experience. Meanwhile the inside of the new Sorento’s cabin, offers a number of enhancements making for a relaxed environment.

The centre console features a Bluetooth for your convenience While the test model was the base unit, all other models are fitted standard with a powered six-way driver’s seat. Heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats are standard on the AWD model. This model further features park distance control to prevent those reversing incidents and for convenience a Start/Stop button with a smart key. A Bluetooth hands-free system offers a handy cellphone connection.

The new model has a stiffer body shell structure and new vibration-damping sub-frame mountings. These are an excellent foundation for minimising road vibrations through the floorwhich are reduced by 5%. Through the steering wheel, vibrations are reduced by 4% – making the Sorento one of the quietest vehicles in its class.

You can expect ultimate comfort from the Kia Sorento

Best of all is the drive train which. Freed from the AWD systems weight, it makes for a very agile vehicle as the Kia Sorento features the R2.2 TCI diesel engine. The 146.9 kW TCI engines feature new exhaust systems, which cuts the production of nitrogen oxide and reduces CO2 emissions. All of this results in less damage to the environment

Maximum torque on this model is 436.4 Nm @ 1800-2500 rpm enabling the Sorento  to reach 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds on the AWD automatic model. Every Kia Sorento model features six-speed automatic transmissions. The top-gear ratios reduce fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions when cruising at speed.

The box features two operating modes – fully automatic or a ‘sport’ mode allows for clutch-less sequential manual gear changes – up or down, one ratio at a time – for greater driver involvement.

The 2WD drive train – tested – offers approximately 60kg less weight than the AWD system which enhances fuel economy while still delivering good on-road traction. It is also aided by the standard-fit TCS (Traction Control System) linked to the vehicle’s ABS system.

A long list of active and passive safety technologies are found in the Sorento, and they include: ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HAC (Hill-start Assist Control), CBC (Cornering Brake Control), ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), BAS (Brake Assist System), TC (Traction Control), ROP (Roll-over Protection), active headrests and ISOFIX child seat anchors.

For maximum stopping power, all Kia Sorento models are equipped with an all-disc braking system. This features larger diameter ventilated front discs and 302mm solid discs at the rear.  Stopping from 100 km/h can now be achieved in as little as 36.3 meters.
