A few South African celebrities had the opportunity to take the winner of the European Car of 2016 for a spin on Kyalami Racetrack on Wednesday. The Opel Astra, launched in 2016, was also a finalist in the 2017 Wesbank South African Guild of Motoring Journalists Car of the Year competition.

Well-known personalities such as Skeem Saam, actress Natasha Thahane, multi-award winning hip hop artist Emtee and ANN7 news anchor and brand influencer Abigail Visagie were present. They were excited to try out the Astra with its new design and which is targeted at dynamic city slickers and the socially young at heart.

The General Motors South Africa team and Product Communications Manager at GMSA, Lunga Ntsendwana, welcomed the personalities and introduced them to the stylish, reliable and dynamic features of the Opel Astra.”Now lighter than its predecessor, the Opel Astra is also more fuel economic thanks to the Stop/Start technology and boasts the IntelliLink Touch screen with satellite navigation and advanced infotainment.

“The design and engineering of the Opel Astra is based on efficiency, connectivity, advanced driver assistance and safety technology. The five-door hatchback is designed to meet fast-changing consumer needs and demands. It is affordable to run due to a lighter and athletic design, improved aerodynamics and powerful engines,” says Ntsendwana.

The personalities were excited to get first-hand experience of the Opel Astra especially as it included driving around the famous Kyalami Racetrack. After test-driving the vehicle on the racetrack, hip hop artist Emtee said, “This is the by far one of coolest and slickest car designs. The Astra is so stylish and I love that the technology is so current. The sound quality and touch screen technology really impressed me.”

After her drive Natasha Thahane said, “It was such an exhilarating drive and I learnt so much about handling the curves. I was amazed by how well the Astra handled the curves with such ease whilst still feeling so comfortable.”
