Driving delight
The 2 series coupe and convertible launched last year and given the engines fitted at the time, it was, in all probability seen as somewhat of a performance model. This is especially with the 6-cylinder turbo model pushing out 250kW – the territory one associates with the M version.
The 220D is a tamed down version that manifests all the sporting attributes of the brand but with a far more economical engine tuned to produce 135 Kw of power.
As this model is geared – in my opinion – to the motorist who focusses more on looks (the test vehicle had the M badge proudly on display as it has the sports kit) than in outright performance, it makes sense that the diesel is a logical and efficient choice. Fuel consumption is impressive to say the least but, in my case, using the existing performance it was probably not a true reflection of its real potential. See claimed figures in specification.
The ride, notwithstanding the sport kit, is compliant and comfortable but being a coupé any access to the rear seats is a ‘challenge’ particularly for adults. With three drive mode options – tuned on a switch on the console and viewed through the vehicle ‘I Drive’ – there is always one available to suit the driver’s mood. I my case sport is the only option.
Seen from a driver’s perspective, there is little lacking for either comfort, entertainment or information. The high-resolution 8.8-inch central display now comes in touchscreen form if the optional Navigation system Professional is specified as is the case with the test model. Interestingly, the new-generation models present the option of powering compatible smartphones wirelessly by means of an inductive charging tray. Apple CarPlay can also be accessed via a BMW navigation system.
Peace of mind comes by way (and yes, I connected in error) the standard SIM card integrated into the car. It enables connectivity and access to BMW services via BMW ConnectedDrive, without the need for a linked smartphone. Information available to the driver includes Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI) with hazard previewand access to the vehicle via Remote Services.
The assistance systems include Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function but in this instance remained switched off most of the time. The Driving Assist is also available as an option and comprises the lane departure warning system and city collision mitigation. This applies the brakes automatically at speeds up to 60 km/h in response to an imminent collision with a car, motorcycle or pedestrian.
The BMW 220D offers convenience for everyday commute with the ability to offer occasional performance benefits along with a frugal use of fuel it’s a winner.
