Launch review: Ford Ranger Thunder

Launch review: Ford Ranger Thunder
August 18, 2020 by MasterTorque

The limited edition Ford Ranger Thunder is designed to embody the Ranger life: the feeling of achieving more than what you think you can. Consequently, the bakkie delivers on even more versatility, charm and power from this exclusive option which is derived from the successful Ranger Wildtrak.

Versatility

During the launch, the presenters Angie Khumalo and David Goliath showed off some of the most appealing aspects of the bakkie. One area that Ford perfected is the easy, smooth and noiseless opening or closing of the tailgate. It also has a lockable and airtight protective covering that prevents even a speck of dust from getting in when driving on dirt roads.

South Africa is a nation of bakkie lovers because of the practicality that these vehicles have to offer. Ford demonstrated the impressive towing abilities of the vehicle. Whether it is towing a trailer load of furniture between homes or a caravan to a weekend away, the Ranger Thunder is up to the job. Even with the heavy load, it seamlessly pulls off without hassle, with its 3.5 tonne towing capacity. The virtual presentation illustrated how the built-in reverse camera can be used to reverse to exactly the correct spot for hitching.

Charm
A big part of the Ranger life is about driving fun that comes with taking the bakkie out into its natural habitat. Water and streams are no challenge with its ability to wade in 800mm high water. The transmission’s Progressive Range Select (PRS) function gives drivers the ability to lock out gears from the automatic shifting range. This is ideal for towing or when driving in slippery conditions or climbing steep gradients. Features like these allow you to take the bakkie to the max.

The semi-autonomous driving technology was also displayed as you watched the Ranger Thunder move into a parallel parking with no assistance (other than accelerating and braking) from the driver.

In terms of design, a presence is created with red accents on the grille. The integrated sports hoop fitted as standard on Wildtrak models now gains a striking red insert for further flair. A number of other exclusive additions are included with the Thunder derivative.

In the interior, leather is used in both the seats and the dash. This is with red stitching in the seats and ‘Thunder,’ written on the seat to emphasise the impression of sportiness and give a unique feel.

Goliath was particularly impressed with the 4×4 capabilities of the bakkie. He said that even though he is not an experienced 4×4 driver, it was still easy and enjoyable to do because he ‘didn’t do anything, the Ranger did it all.’ The technology in the vehicle opens the possibilities of 4×4 driving to everyone as you can elect that the vehicle does it for you and you almost become a passenger.

Power

The Ranger takes you to places that you wouldn’t think you could ordinarily go. Drivers can enjoy 157 kW of power from the 2.0 Bi-Turbo engine and a 10-speed automatic gearbox. Its torque is set at 500 Nm.

According to the presenters, drivers can enjoy the confidence inspired by the feeling of complete control while driving. Technology, like adaptive cruise control, makes driving on roads like those in Gauteng much easier.

There is also lane-keeping and lane assist and autonomous braking to prevent potential collisions that the driver may not react quickly enough to. A Driver Alert System informs the driver by means of visual, audible and vibration warnings if fatigue is detected.

In addition to the limited edition Ranger Thunder, Ford has bolstered the standard specification on almost its entire Ranger line-up.

The launch was aptly concluded by noting ‘if the Ford Ranger Thunder was a multiple-choice question you would tick every answer because it does everything.’
