The fifth generation Lexus RX (third generation in South Africa) ditches some of the elements that made the previous generation seem a bit outdated for the times. Not only does it update the infotainment screen but also has techn, like a digital rearview mirror, that take it even further into the future.
Lexus intends for the RX 450+ PHEV to give drivers the best of both worlds allowing the petrol motor to step in once the electric range is used up. Its ‘Orca killer whale’ profile is meant to showcase a spindle body design and seamless grille projecting a strong, clean athletic presence.

The drive
Behind the wheel of the RX 450+ you will notice the serene driving experience courtesy of the hybrid technology delivers. This powertrain provides effortless acceleration and tackles all driving scenarios with remarkable ease, whether you are overtaking, accelerating to gain speed, driving up an incline or running errands locally.
The 2.5-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine works together with dual electric motors. This produces a combined output of 227 kW and 497 Nm of torque. This is paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The transitions between electric and hybrid modes are seamless, contributing to the driving experience.
It has an electric range of around 66km, the perfect distance for daily commutes to and from work. The 450h+ can be charged from a standard wall socket. It charges to full in just under three hours meaning plugging the SUV in each night will allow you to commute to work solely on electric power.

I came on the wrong side of quite a deep pothole and when I was inspecting the tyre I saw quite a few scuffs and damage on both rear tyres which appeared to be from hitting kerb in addition to pothole damage. So, it seems likely a common mistake to make if you are not accustomed to the vehicle. New drivers may need time to adjust to its dimensions to avoid kerb damage.
Lexus does say the SUV is equipped with larger brakes and rear-wheel steering to enhance manoeuvrability at low speeds while providing greater stability at higher speeds.
Lexus claims an average fuel consumption of 1.3L/100km, IF, you use only electric power. This is affected by how often you charge and real-world driving so it would be more accurate to expect fuel consumption around 6L/100km. These were our figures from mixed city and highway driving. This is still impressive for an SUV of this size, and the hybrid technology delivers fuel economy that would be impossible to achieve with a conventional petrol engine alone.
The design
Lexus has clearly targeted premium buyers with the RX exterior redesign. The LED light signatures create a distinctive presence that emphasises its luxury. The design projects a strong, clean athletic presence. its low centre of gravity is accentuated by standard 21-inch 20-spoke alloy wheels with a dark premium metallic finish. At the rear, a single lens taillamp wraps around the body, further emphasising the RX’s wide and low silhouette.
The interior represents a significant departure from previous generations. Gone are the trackpads that were dated at that time already. They are replaced by more commonly expected touchscreens which bring the RX firmly into the modern era. The wrap-around dashboard design creates a futuristic feel.

Stepping Inside
The cabin is where the RX PHEV truly excels as a sanctuary for both driver and passengers. The semi-aniline leather-trimmed interior seats are electrically adjustable in both the front and rear rows, with the rear seats even offering reclining functionality. Both rows are well-padded and make for a luxurious drive. Heated and ventilated front seats come standard, along with a heated steering wheel.
The tech is comprehensive, centred around the afore mentioned 14-inch infotainment screen that serves as the vehicle’s digital hub. The rearview mirror was my favourite part of the SUV. it is a digital rearview mirror that is crystal clear and far superior to any view one could possibly get with a normal mirror
The 450h+ has Apple CarPlay and initially I thought it did not have Android Auto, or at least not one that does all the connectivity work for you, but on investigation saw that you need to plug your phone in to activate it.
Other features once can expect include third-zone climate control, full-length panoramic sunroof as standard, five charging ports (two USB-C and three USB-A), a wireless charging pad, handsfree power rear luggage door, Head-Up Display, ambient lighting and surround sound.

Safety
As can be expected, safety equipment in the Lexus is comprehensive. A standout feature is the Digital Latch with Safe Exit Assist – when exiting the vehicle, it helps detect a vehicle or bicycle approaching from the rear and prevents the occupant from opening the door if it senses danger.
Other features include:
- Adaptive cruise control with lane tracing assist
- 360-degree cameras
- Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection
- Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
- Blind-spot monitoring
- Intelligent Park Assist
- Intelligent High Beam Assist
If you are looking for a large, sporty SUV that prioritises performance, the RX 450h+ is not for you. If absolute comfort, modern technology, and impressive fuel efficiency in a luxury package are your priorities, then the Lexus RX PHEV delivers admirably.
The hybrid technology is the star of the show, providing fuel economy that traditional petrol engines simply cannot match in a vehicle of this size. If you value refinement, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology and appreciate the value of great fuel economy, the Lexus RX 450h+ represents a compelling argument.
