Sam says it’s stepping forward
The Renault Stepway Sandero proved to be popular amongst consumers when it was introduced to the market in 2009. The manufacture is now stepping up their game with the Stepway Plus which comes with a turbo engine and more safety features and smart technologies.
The Stepway Plus has a 3-cylinder, 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol engine. Renault says that adding the turbo is an ‘F1-inspired’ move that allows for 66 kW of power and excellent fuel-efficiency. The torque is set at 135 Nm. Not only is this available in the Plus range but offered across the full range.
The turbo goes a long way in ensuring that the vehicle has a fair amount of power for a 0.9L. The kerb weight of 1 055kg likely plays a role in this too. It never had an issue overtaking or reaching higher speeds. Some concern, however, has been expressed about the power dropping considerably once you have more than two passengers and luggage.
Fuel-efficiency is claimed to start at 5.2L/100km but in the case of the Plus it sits at 5.4 L/100km. I only managed to get 7.0L/100km with more traffic than open road driving. There was also ¾ of a tank of petrol left even though I spent a fair amount of time driving around. If I spent more time with the car, I likely could have gotten closer to 5.4.
Renault does a good job in reducing/insulating the noise usually associated with 3-cylinder vehicles. This is hugely appealing to anyone who is less than happy with the noisy 3-cylinders currently on the market.
Renault designed the Stepway Plus with an SUV design in mind. When it comes to crossovers, the Stepway Plus definitely has more space to offer. This is without any major impacts to the power of the vehicle. With 292L of boot space, Renault even claims to have boot space that leads the class.
The Stepway Plus also has a great range of perks. Renault says the it has ‘enriched standard features,’ including side airbags, front and rear power windows, electric side mirrors, leather steering wheel and gear knob and rear park assist.
Something that few other cars in this segment have, that the Stepway does, is cruise control and navigation. There is an on-board multimedia system with 7” touchscreen, Smartphone Mirroring, an extremely beneficial functionality with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Anyone in the market for a slightly larger car but without the increased fuel consumption and high prices, should consider the Stepway Plus. My fuel consumption was not as good as I hoped but it was still not bad. The price is particularly appealing considering the tech and safety features of the car.
