Most drivers believe that once they put the phone down, or stop speaking to a passenger, their attention is back on the road. Yet, research into what is known as ‘attention residue’ shows a driver’s mind can remain partly tied to a task for a noticeable stretch following that task, even when hands are on the wheel and eyes on the road.
The CEO of MasterDrive, Eugene Hetbert, says, this is part of cognitive distraction that fleet operators often overlook. “Conversations about distracted driving usually focus on the moment of distraction itself. Less attention is paid to the recovery period afterwards.
“When the brain is still processing the interrupted thought while simultaneously trying to re-engage with driving, full attention has not yet returned to the road. A portion of attention is still occupied by the distraction. Depending on how demanding that task was, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes for full focus to return.”
This lag is particularly relevant for fleet drivers, who switch tasks constantly throughout a shift. “A driver doesn’t need to be mid-conversation to be cognitively compromised. They can be five minutes past a stressful dispatch call or difficult client interaction and still be operating with reduced hazard perception.
“The danger is not just in the distraction. It is in the tail end of it, which drivers do not notice because it does not feel like distraction and only feels like normal driving. This attention residue is more dangerous as a driver is not aware they are distracted and is not putting the same cognitive effort into not letting the distraction affect their driving.”
The most practical solution is to not eliminate every interruption, which is unrealistic on the road. “Instead, operators should build in a deliberate re-entry habits. Re-focusing should be treated as its own step, that a driver intentionally does instead of trusting it will occur automatically.
“After any conversation or mental interruption, consciously check mirrors, scan the intersection ahead, and check following distance. Treat the seconds after a distraction with the same caution as the seconds during it.”
For fleet managers, this reframes what driver training and monitoring should target. “Rather than only flagging phone handling or visible inattention, drivers should be taught to include what happens in the minutes following the actual distraction.
“Recognising that the brain does not switch tasks instantly provides a more realistic picture of where risk actually sits during an attention shift, not just when it is most obvious. This will help operators better manage it and drivers be aware that a distraction last longer than what they think,” says Herbert.
