Toolbox Talks to the rescue

The measures taken to reduce the potential impact of the coronavirus pandemic in South Africa, has created financial difficulties for many companies that will persist for some time. Yet, despite these difficulties, there is often very little these companies can cut back on, irrespective of challenges being faced on the roads.

The managing director of MasterDrive, Eugene Herbert, says health and safety policies is one area where reducing essentials, such as driver training, can have a detrimental effect. “If the worst were to happen, the consequences could be devastating to any company. For this reason, MasterDrive developed a number of Toolbox Talks to help companies maintain high health and safety records during this time.

“The Toolbox Talks are brief instructional modules that fleet operators can use to upskill drivers to better handle road conditions and challenges. The theoretical components will refresh a driver’s skills or be used as basic guides and reminders on issues such as correct and safe lane changes and essential vehicle inspections. These educational aids highlight important issues or address skills drivers often forget.

“The Toolbox Talks will also prove instrumental in managing challenges on the roads that are likely to follow lockdown. This includes tips on handling the expected increase in hijack risk and the tendency to drive more aggressively as a result of increased stress.”

These aids are not meant to replace the advanced roadcraft training that fleet drivers require. “If, however, you have identified an area where your drivers may need additional instruction, the Toolbox Talks can provide for this need.

MasterDrive is also aware that during these trying times, any extra expenditure can be difficult to manage. For this reason, the company would like to make the Toolbox Talks available to any NPOs or companies facing financial difficulties on a complimentary basis. It is MasterDrive’s way of giving back to South Africa and playing its role in ensuring road safety.

Every company is facing some kind of challenge as the country gradually returns to normal. “Whether it is an upsurge in work opportunities or a decrease in business, the Toolbox Talks educational aids can make a difference to whatever challenge you face,” says Herbert.
