VW Polo Vivo scores four stars #SaferCarsforAfrica

Global NCAP has tested both the new and the previous model of the VW Polo Vivo. VW took the decision to improve the Polo Vivo’s safety equipment in the new facelifted model by adding optional side body and side head airbags as well as Electronic Stability Control (ESC).

 

The improved Polo Vivo achieves four stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection (*) in a voluntary test. The old model scored a rating of only two stars for adult occupant protection and three stars for child occupant protection in an involuntary test.

 

Global NCAP’s crash test protocols assess frontal and side impact protection for all models, as well as Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Pedestrian protection and side pole impact protection assessments are required for vehicles scoring the highest star ratings (**)

 

 

Polo Vivo (updated model)

  • The VW Polo Vivo has two airbags and pedestrian protection fitted as standard.
  • The structure and footwell area are rated as stable and can withstand further loadings.
  • The updated Polo Vivo offers optional side thorax head airbags that offers good head protection in the side pole impact.
  • The model only offers two-point belts in the rear centre seating position.

  • The VW Polo Vivo has two airbags and pedestrian protection fitted as standard.
  • The structure and footwell area are rated as stable and can withstand further loadings.
  • The model only offers two-point belts in the rear centre seating position.

 

 ISOFIX anchors are standard. Side impact head protection shows weak performance. Both child dummies showed good protection. The car does not offer the possibility of disconnecting passenger airbags if a rearward facing CRS is installed in the passenger seat.

 

David Ward, Executive President of the Towards Zero Foundation says, “The Polo Vivo is one of the best-selling models in South Africa. With a disappointing result for the old model, it is satisfying to see VW offering safety feature improvements for the new version. We strongly recommend consumers to choose the model offering higher levels of protection.”

 

 Bobby Ramagwede, CEO of the Automobile Association of South Africa says, “The VW Polo Vivo is undeniably one of South Africa’s favourite cars particularly among young, first-time buyers. It is encouraging to see vehicle manufacturers voluntarily crash-testing their flagship models and making efforts to improve the safety features of their offerings.’’
