The new Golf GTI, like all previous generations, still sets the benchmark as the best hot hatch of all time. With every new generation, the Golf becomes more dynamic and offers drivers an even more enthusiastic drive than the generation before. This is true for the latest Golf GTI.
VW continues to live up to its name as the producers of one of the best sports cars with the latest offering just working out some of the creases from its previous generation, according to the manufacturer.
The drive
On start-up there is that thrum that excites and enthrals sports car fanatics. Drivers can expect 169 kW of power and 350 Nm of power.
It almost seems redundant complimenting the DSG and its seamless gear changes but likewise it the impressiveness of needs mention. There is no lag on the second gear which plenty of cars cannot seem to get right.
The suspension is very soft. This is especially compared to other hot hatches on the market. This is one of the places where you can feel quality and a defining feature for us.
While the driver of the Golf GTI did not likely buy it for fuel economy, this is a bonus that they still get. When the car was in economy mode we managed to get between 6.4 and 6.8 litres. In full sport mode you can expect it to jump a bit but this is still a plus for the GTI.
The interior
The interior is everything you would expect from a sports car from stylish but extremely comfortable seating to a steering wheel that almost seems to invite you to hold it. Rear passengers will also find themselves with the same comfort as well as plenty of leg room.
An interesting aspect of the interior is the increased boot space. While it still does not offer the space a family would be looking for (sorry to all the parents out there trying to convince their partners that it is) it will not go unappreciated by its drivers. This is particularly so for those planning on filling the boot with a sound system.
Overall, it is a joy to drive for those in their target audience as both a sports car and a daily runner. VW is again showing why they dominate the hot hatch market both now and for the last decade.
